Female industry leaders reflect on fearlessness in their careers at International Women’s Day 2025

The liquor industry is brimming with examples of fearless women driving change and excelling in their careers. Two of those women – Kerry Appathurai, National Sales Director at Lion, and Mia Horner, General Manager Customer Loyalty at Coles Liquor Group – spoke on this topic at the Drinks Association’s 2025 International Women’s Day lunch.

Addressing a room of 400+ industry peers, Kerry and Mia shared their insights and lessons from a combined 34 years of working in drinks. From stepping out of your comfort zone to embrace opportunities, to building a support network and being fearless everyday, Kerry and Mia had the audience hooked.

For those unable to attend the lunch, we share some of their key reflections from the day.

Advice for younger self

Kerry began the discussion by reflecting on the advice she would give her younger self. "The only person you need to ask permission from is yourself," she stated, emphasising the importance of self-confidence and self-belief.

In stressing the need to assert oneself and trust your voice, she also underscored the importance of diversity and inclusion.

“We’ve all sat in meetings where we’ve got something to say,” she said. “But you didn’t say it because you questioned if it would add value. Or if you would sound silly. I’ve learned through leadership that your voice is powerful and every voice should be heard.”

The importance of networks and mentoring

Both Kerry and Mia spoke about the necessity of establishing and nurturing a robust professional network from an early stage. For anyone in the industry, this is about seeking out mentors and building a tribe around you to support you in each step in your career. Mia also encouraged more senior or experienced people to consider how they can mentor the next generation to ensure a sustainable and thriving industry.

“Think about your impact,” she said. “Think about the impact you’re going to have on your colleagues and younger talent coming through your organisation. What can you teach them about? Find somebody that you can really bring under your wing and impart your wisdom.”

As for seeking our mentors for your own personal and professional development, Kerry’s advice was to build a network of people who “would call out your name in a room full of opportunities.”

“It doesn’t matter if you’re a competitor or a colleague, reach out and find those advocates and sponsors,” added Mia. “That’s what’s going to propel your career.”

Being fearless and taking risks

Boldness and risk-taking were two strong themes throughout the presentation. Kerry shared her own experience of joining the liquor industry seven years ago, saying she initially hesitated to join what she perceived as a male-dominated industry.

“I was selling confectionery, ice-cream and dairy when I got the call from Lion,” she recalled. “My initial reaction was that the job would be too big for me. I saw it as really blokey and didn’t think I would be accepted in an environment like that.

“Looking back, I’ve learned that you know more than you think you know and you can absolutely do more than you think you can.”
